Fiberglass Polyester Resin Instructions

FIBERGLASS (POLYESTER) RESIN

Use Fiberglass polyester resin with fiberglass fabric to make original parts into a mold or use with mat or cloth over fiberglass, metal, wood, or concrete.   Polyester resin must always be used with fabric or fillers, as it will crack used alone as a coating.  Clean and degrease/dewax surface with Acetone.   Do not apply over Epoxy, Paint, Varnish, and Styrofoam, and be sure to test other surfaces. Clean brushes and tools with acetone.

Add 3/4 to 1% MEKP Hardener in temperatures above 25C/80F, and 1 to 2% in temperatures below 15C/60F, to the volume of resin you can use within 10 to 15 minutes.  Working time is 15 to 20 minutes.  Sandable in 3 to 4 Hrs, and can be longer in temperatures below 15C°. Do not use below 8C°.   The unused catalyzed resin may start to get hot within 20 to 30 min, so be sure to keep the container on a heat-resistant surface.

Use unwaxed resin for the application of multiple layers of fiberglass.  Gelcoat or more resin can be applied over cured unwaxed resin without sanding.  Use waxed (add 5% Styrene wax/Air Dry to unwaxed resin) resin for final coats that need to be sanded. If you need to apply more resin or Gelcote over waxed resin, remove the wax with Acetone, sand, and wipe down with acetone again. Add, 3M Bubbles, Micro Balloons, or Talc to make a light filler or fairing compound. Add Arkthix, Milled Glass Fibre, or Short Strand Fibre with 25% Colloidal Silica to make a structural filler.
