East System Epoxy Resin Instructions

EAST SYSTEM EPOXY RESIN INSTRUCTIONS

USE TO:

  • Coat and waterproof wood, metal, plastic, and most porous surfaces
  • Laminate with Fiberglas, Carbon, Kevlar
  • Glue, Fill, and Fair with the addition of fillers.

SURFACE PREP: Apply directly to clean and dry wood.  For fiberglass or metal, clean the surface with Acetone or Lacquer thinner, sand with 220 grit or less, and remove dust.  Do not use Varsol or petroleum-based solvents.

MIXING:  Mix 5 parts East System Epoxy Resin with 1 part East System Fast or Slow Hardener.  Use graduated containers or pumps to measure the mixture, don’t guess. Too much or too little hardener will affect the proper cure.  Mix thoroughly, scraping the sides and bottom of the container, adding fillers if desired, and spread with a solvent-resistant Brush, Roller, or Squeegee.

RECOATING: Recoat with East System Epoxy as soon as the previous coat is tacky, between 2 to 6 hours depending on hardener and temperature.  Sand with 80 grit sandpaper when the epoxy is hard enough to sand without clogging the paper, between 8 to 24 hours.

Recoat with Paint or Varnish after a 7-day full cure.  Sand to 220 grit, remove dust with water and a clean cloth, and allow it to dry thoroughly for at least 1 hour before applying the coating.  Two-part polyurethane coatings over Epoxy will last longer and be much more scratch-resistant than Enamel paints.

POT LIFE and CURE TIMES: Pot Life and sanding time will vary depending on temperature, mixed volume, time in the mixing container, and laminate thickness and will roughly double for an 8C drop in temperature, and ½ for an 8C rise.

To extend working time pour the mixed epoxy into a paint tray or spread it onto the work surface as soon as possible, a thin film will take longer to gel.  Volumes over 100 ml will get HOT if left in the mixing pot. Fast and Slow hardeners are blendable to customize pot life and will cure as low as 5C.
