If you're building or re-skinning a hull that will sit in the water, osmotic blistering is the problem to plan for. AOC H034 promoted vinyl ester resin gives a laminate maximum blister resistance, even if you use it only for the skin coat.
Where vinyl ester fits
Vinyl ester sits between the two resins most boat builders already know. It's tougher than polyester and less costly than epoxy, in both performance and bulk price. It's also the thinnest of the three:
- Vinyl ester: about 200 cps
- Polyester: about 500 cps
- Epoxy: about 900 cps
Thinner resin wets out reinforcement fabric more easily.
Why use it on your boat
- A blister barrier: one skin coat behind the gelcoat gives maximum resistance to osmotic blistering.
- Fewer stress cracks: it resists cracking from laminate flex, again even as a skin coat only.
- Tough parts: excellent strength and toughness in the finished composite.
- Clean finish: a good surface profile with less post-cure on finished parts.
Plan your layup
- Reinforcement: fiberglass cloth or carbon and Kevlar fabrics
- Tools: laminating rollers and mixing and measuring supplies
