The last layer of a fiberglass job needs to cure hard and dry, not tacky. That's what waxed polyester resin does. Wax in the resin rises and seals the surface as it cures, so your final laminate or patch ends up tack-free and ready to sand.
Good for
- Final coats on hull, deck and transom repairs
- One-and-done patches where nothing goes on top
- Prepping a repair for paint. Take the wax off with a wax and grease remover first.
If you're building up many layers, start with unwaxed polyester resin for the build-up and finish with this one.
Tips for a good result
- Mind the temperature. Catalyze with 1.25–2% MEKP between 18 °C and 32 °C, and don't use it below 10 °C. That matters for spring work in an unheated garage.
- Test first. Heat, humidity and batch size all change pot life and gel time, so mix a small trial batch before the real one.
- It handles vertical work. It's low viscosity, wets out every type of fiberglass fabric, and drains very little on vertical surfaces.
- Adding layers: before you lay up more glass or put new resin or gelcoat over waxed resin, always sand it and wipe it down with acetone.
You'll also need
- MEK peroxide hardener: the resin won't cure without it
- Fiberglass mat or fiberglass cloth
- Brushes and rollers
